Crash Course of Islamic Banking and Finance

Centre for Islamic Economics, Banking, and Finance, together with the European Muslim Student Association (EMSA) organized a „Crash Course of Islamic Banking and Finance“ on June 1. at International University Sarajevo. The aim of the course was to familiarize the students with the basics of the Islamic Banking and Finance, differences between Islamic Banking and Conventional Banking, present current trends in the field as well as possibilities and obstacles for implementation of Islamic Banking in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The first lecturer was professor Velid Efendić who encouraged students to put greater attention to this field both from academic and practical perspective. In this regards, professor Efendić pointed out that the main obstacle for development of Islamic banking in the world is the lack of skills and knowledge.

Dr. Velid Efendić is Assistant professor at the School of Economics and Business (SEBS) of the University of Sarajevo in the field of Finance, Banking and in subfields of Islamic banking and finance. He has over ten years of experience in teaching at the university level and he also has been actively involved in the establishment and organization of Banking Academy SEBS where he was appointed as a first director. From 2013 he has been appointed as the head of the international joint degree MA program in the field of Islamic Banking and Finance led in collaboration of SEBS, B&H, and the University of Bolton, UK. He is one of the founders and members of the managing board of European Association for Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance. The lecturer continued by talking about Islamic economic system, financing models of Islamic banks, and other issues related to this sector.

Besides professor Efendić, Mr. Benjamin Dedić, student of Islamic Banking Master study programme of the School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo and University of Bolton, took part in the course by talking about the worldwide development of Islamic banking and its current trends, as well as Mr. Anes Prentić, also student of Islamic Banking Master study programme who introduced the students with the development of the banking system and Islamic banking in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through its early stages and until today. Lastly, students were introduced with the background and vision of the Centre for Islamic Economics, Banking, and Finance.
