An exhibition of student works from the Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo – Department of Product Design is currently on display in the atrium of the School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo. The exhibition explores the role of the “Repair” design principle within the contemporary 9R circular economy strategy. The exhibition will be open to visitors until 6 March 2026.
As part of the implementation of the project “REPper: REPair PERspective”, carried out in cooperation with ten regional partners from eight European countries (https://repper.interreg-euro-med.eu/), collaboration between two organizational units of the University of Sarajevo – the School of Economics and Business and the Academy of Fine Arts – is demonstrated through the organization of this student exhibition at the premises of the School of Economics and Business. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the importance and relevance of the “Repair” design principle within the 9R strategy, which forms the foundation of the circular economy concept.
The exhibited works of students from the Academy of Fine Arts – Department of Product Design present different perspectives on the application and effectiveness of the Repair design principle, following the contemporary principles of the 9R strategy (Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle and Recover) within current circular economy policies.
The selection of student works reflects on the role and importance of the Repair principle in the context of modular design and/or foldable and disassemblable product systems, highlighting the potential for replacing damaged components or repairing entire product systems.
Through diverse approaches — from modular seating systems and foldable armchairs adapted to small spaces to educational toys that teach sustainability — the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider their perspective. Repair is not only a technical act, but a continuous process of connection, learning, and responsible use, based on the idea that design represents change over time rather than a fixed ideal. In an era of accelerated consumption and mass production, these student projects offer an alternative to the “buy–use–discard” concept, emphasizing how design can encourage responsibility and durability through a meaningful application of the Repair principle. Student perspectives demonstrate that repair is not merely a hidden intervention or a technical issue, but an integral part of the relationship between users and products.
The works of students from the Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach in the realization of semester projects, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of the Product Design study program in the field of sustainable design. In particular, they highlight the connection between the disciplines of economics and design through the effective application of the Repair design principle in future professional practice.
